Plugins: Category Icons made Easy

Sometimes it’s the smallest touches that lift a design and hammer home a feel of quality and attention to detail. A few well placed and well designed icons can make all the difference.

I noticed the icons on this site: theinterchangedesk.com

I asked the author what plugin he was using to run the icons. He wasn’t using a plugin, so I went on the hunt for something to allow the same effect without the need to get in amongst the code for every post.

I’ve tested this plugin on another blog this afternoon, and plan to use it here shortly when I complete a set of icons.

This WordPress plugin allows you to assign images to categeories. You can attach two images to each category - normal icon and small icon.

It works well, and quickly. My test run took 5 minutes from download to having automated icons appearing for half a dozen categories.

It’s flexible, for example you don’t have to have icons for every category, and they can be any size. So the plugin could also be used to provide graphical headers for article series, recurring post topics, or to brighten up otherwise dull speedlinking posts with a nice header.

And remember people, don’t just run and steal other peoples icons without permission or checking the licencing first!

Plugin link There hasn’t been much visible action on the blog recently, so I’m not sure what support will be like for this plugin. If anyone knows do let me know.

    Thanks for your MBL message and the info re this plugin. I’m at a conference for a few days this week but as soon as I can I’ll check this out. I did try looking for a WP solution to this while I was designing the site two months ago but couldn’t find anything that quite worked. I appreciate you taking the time to mention this and track down the plugin. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
